October 2013, Adam Adair opened Adair Tire which has a very familiar name to many in north Jefferson County. A former business by the same name operated in Fultondale from 1948 to 1997. The business remains in the family; Adam Adair is the great-nephew of Harold Adair, who owned Adair Tire in Fultondale for the last 25 years that it was in business.
“I mainly just wanted to keep the good name going,” said Adam Adair. “I wanted to keep it a mom-and-pop place and not a franchise.”
Harold’s father, William Author Adair, opened the original business on Stouts Road in 1948. Harold Adair said the building contained a service station, cafe and grocery store. The first building burned in 1954, and Adair rebuilt on the same spot. Harold worked at the store, and then became the owner in 1972. He said he is glad to see the family business continuing after being closed for 16 years.
“I wish Adam the best of luck in the world,” Harold Adair said. “If he wants my advice, I’ll give him any help I can.”
Adam Adair said he will certainly be taking his great-uncle up on the offer.
“I hope he stops by every day and gets coffee,” Adam Adair said with a smile.
